Spinal Disorder Comp - Report by Andrew Gul
 11/11/2008

Hey Guys,

The second year of the spinal disorder mini ramp comp was held as part of the Royal Melbourne Show thanks to Freestyle bmx Australia.

The Mini ramp was indoors away from the rain and wind so that was a big plus for all riders. First runs everyone was still getting used to the ramp so there were a few good slams but most adapted very quickly. There wasn't much difference with AM and PRO this year. Kids are getting all crazy and throwing down some cunning stunts.

Lil Alex from Brisbane was killing it and walked away the win for AM. I had been riding the ramp a fair bit prior to the contest so i knew what to expect. There was about 60 riders total on the day so there wasn't a lot of practice time for those who hadn't ridden the ramp yet.

Everyone one was busting big tricks straight up and again there were more crashes. I made it into the finals with a steady run and i even touched the roof for a few kicks. I've done it in the demo's a few times and it's so gnarly on camera.

Finals went down with MORE crashes. I tried to stay on but hooked up on a 360 whip on the spine and landed no feet. And broke my jeans. Second run was scary 'cause a guy had a bad crash just before i rode and it made me a little cautious. I just cruised around going high on most things and then banged out a big flair, super seat grab on the spine and finished with a dip 360.

The vibe was real intense as i could see Chris O'Donnell from Sydney get all fired up and drop in. This kid can shred so i waiting for him to destroy the whole ramp. He put in a good run and i knew it was between him and me for the win.

When they called out Danger for 2nd i was so stoked that i fell back off the spine and had to walk around to take 1st place. I was so happy on the whole thing and i even rocked up early the next day to finish off the demo's we had.

All in all the event was a total success thanks to Dinny Spicer and the guys at FreeStyle BMX and Mark from Strictly BMX.

Off to China in next, so stay tuned!!!!!!

PEACE.
GUL
